CEE | How Should Education Researchers Use Their Values? With Harry Brighouse and Courtney Bell
December 2, 2025, 4–5:30 p.m.
159 Education Building (Wisconsin Idea Room)
Center for Ethics & Education Director Harry Brighouse, WCER Director Courtney Bell
Everyone who does research in education is guided by a set of moral and ethical values. These values influence what researchers choose to study, the audiences they prefer to communicate with, and the improvements they recommend. As empirical researchers, they do not allow their values to influence the outcomes of their studies, which they aspire to be warranted by the inquiry processes and standards of social science. How then should they best integrate their values with their empirical findings when communicating with practitioners and policy makers, and when recommending improvements? This question has driven the work of the Center for Ethics and Education for the past decade. The conversation between Courtney Bell and Harry Brighouse will explore some of these issues, with opening remarks by Percival Matthews.
