As heralds of innovation, engineers are entrusted to protect our communities by designing, building, and maintaining our world. Yet, our understanding of how to educate them to connect communities and engineering remains fragmentary, often excluding the experiences of multilingual and multidialectal groups. This presentation focuses on the role of language and culture for situating engineering practices within social contexts and how Latinx, AfroLatinx and Black students draw on their language and cultural background to approach design considerations of ill-defined and socially-oriented problems.
Sponsored by the UW–Madison School of Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
